Post-Surgical Rehabilitation & Pre-Hab in Salt Lake City | Mindful Movement PT

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation and Pre-Hab in Salt Lake City

Whether you are preparing for an upcoming surgery or recovering from one, the quality of your physical therapy directly impacts your outcome. At Mindful Movement PT, Dr. Emily Warren (DPT, credentialed McKenzie therapist) provides 60-minute one-on-one post-surgical rehabilitation and pre-hab programs that give you the focused attention you need during this critical recovery period.

Why Pre-Hab Matters: Preparing Your Body for Surgery

Prehabilitation is preparation for the demands of surgery and recovery. A visit can help assess your starting function, practice permitted activity and plan for daily tasks afterward. Benefits vary with the operation, health and program; prehab does not guarantee a fixed percentage faster recovery or a shorter hospital stay.

Use the time available to clarify restrictions, arrange help at home and discuss suitable strength or activity work with your care team. Do not postpone necessary surgery to complete a preset exercise course.

What Pre-Hab Includes

  • Strengthening the muscles surrounding the surgical site
  • Maximizing range of motion before surgery limits it temporarily
  • Education on post-operative precautions, expectations, and home setup
  • Pain management strategies including positioning, ice protocols, and movement patterns
  • Cardiovascular conditioning to support healing capacity
  • Practice of post-surgical exercises so they are familiar when you are in pain

Prepare for spine recovery with a plan you understand

Before surgery, bring the proposed procedure and your surgeon’s instructions. We can review the activities you expect to manage afterward: getting out of bed, stairs, walking at home and returning to work. Preparation is useful even when there is little time before the operation.

Movement, education and your surgical precautions

Before or after surgery, we want the movement plan to make sense to you. Dr. Emily uses her spine-assessment experience to connect your current function with the tasks you need back. We practice permitted activity, check the response and progress within your surgical instructions. McKenzie training can inform assessment when appropriate; your operation and healing stage guide exercise choices.

  • Ask for clear instructions on lifting, bending, driving and when outpatient PT should start.
  • Arrange help for tasks outside those restrictions.
  • Practice permitted transfers and walking with the support you need.
  • Keep a list of questions for the surgical follow-up rather than guessing when to progress.

Pain education can help you understand expected recovery and rebuild confidence, while new weakness, wound changes or other concerning symptoms still need medical review. Once cleared, strength and endurance work progress toward the activities you want back. See the procedure-specific back-surgery recovery guide.

Post-Surgical Spine Rehabilitation

Dr. Emily Warren, DPT, Cert. MDT, provides individualized spine rehabilitation. Treatment follows the procedure and your surgical team’s instructions. Movement assessment, pain education and progressive exercise are adapted to your healing stage.

Conditions We Rehabilitate

  • Discectomy or microdiscectomy: walking, daily-task practice and progressive exercise as cleared.
  • Spinal fusion: respect bone-healing and movement restrictions while rebuilding permitted activity.
  • Decompression for stenosis: assess walking, strength and balance, then progress within the surgical plan.
  • Cervical procedures: follow procedure-specific neck and upper-body restrictions.
  • Vertebral fracture procedures: account for fracture healing and bone health before choosing spinal loading.

Post-Surgical Spine Timeline

Progression follows milestones rather than a single schedule: safe basic mobility, manageable daily activity, clearance for further loading and then the demands of work or recreation. Fusion and decompression have different healing considerations. See the detailed spine-recovery guide and use your surgeon’s instructions for personal restrictions.

Shoulder Surgery Rehabilitation

Shoulder surgery rehabilitation demands meticulous attention to tissue healing timelines and progressive loading. We rehabilitate:

Rotator Cuff Repair

The size of the repair and the surgeon’s protocol guide sling use, permitted motion and strengthening. We help you practice the allowed program, monitor tolerance and progress toward daily tasks as healing permits. Do not borrow another patient’s timeline.

Labral Repair (SLAP, Bankart)

Labral repairs require careful protection of the surgical fixation while gradually restoring range of motion. Sport-specific rehabilitation is critical for overhead athletes and climbers returning to activity.

Shoulder Replacement (Total, Reverse)

Joint replacement rehabilitation focuses on restoring functional range of motion and building the muscular support system around the new joint. Reverse total shoulder replacements have specific deltoid-focused protocols.

Knee Surgery Rehabilitation

Knee surgery rehabilitation requires expertise in restoring range of motion, quadriceps strength, and functional movement patterns.

ACL Reconstruction

ACL rehabilitation is a 9-12 month process with specific criteria-based milestones. Our protocols include early quadriceps activation, progressive loading, neuromuscular retraining, and sport-specific agility work. Return-to-sport testing ensures you are ready, not just that enough time has passed.

Meniscus Repair vs. Meniscectomy

A repair and removal of meniscal tissue can have different weight-bearing and motion restrictions. Bring the exact procedure and instructions so walking, range of motion and strength work fit the surgical plan.

Total Knee Replacement

Care can address swelling, knee motion, strength, walking and stairs. The starting dose should account for healing and your response; forcing through escalating pain is not the goal. Discuss stalled motion or unexpected symptoms with the treating team.

Hip Surgery Rehabilitation

Hip surgery rehabilitation focuses on restoring gait mechanics, building hip strength, and returning to full functional activities.

Total Hip Replacement

Modern hip replacement techniques (anterior, posterior, lateral approach) have different precaution protocols. We tailor rehabilitation to your specific surgical approach, gradually restoring strength, range of motion, and functional mobility. Many patients return to hiking, golf, and recreational activities within 3-4 months.

Hip Labral Repair

Labral repairs require careful protection for 6-8 weeks followed by progressive hip strengthening. Return to impact activities typically occurs at 4-6 months with criteria-based testing.

Hip Arthroscopy (FAI Surgery)

Femoroacetabular impingement surgery corrects bony and soft tissue abnormalities. Rehabilitation progresses through protected mobility, hip strengthening, and sport-specific return protocols.

Why 60-Minute One-on-One Sessions Matter for Surgical Rehab

After surgery, you deserve time to ask questions, practice movements and understand what comes next. Our one-on-one visits give us room to review your precautions, build strength and adjust your plan as you recover. Here is how we support that process:

  • Tissue healing requires precision: Pushing too hard risks re-injury; not pushing enough results in stiffness and weakness. An experienced clinician adjusts treatment moment-to-moment based on tissue response.
  • Manual therapy takes time: Scar tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and soft tissue work cannot be rushed. A 20-minute appointment does not allow adequate hands-on time.
  • Exercise progression requires supervision: Post-surgical patients need real-time form correction and load modification that cannot be delegated to an aide.
  • Education prevents complications: Understanding your precautions, recognizing warning signs, and knowing how to progress at home requires thorough instruction.
  • Psychological support: Recovery from surgery is emotionally challenging. Dedicated time with your therapist provides reassurance and realistic expectations.

Our Approach to Post-Surgical Care

Dr. Emily Warren coordinates care with your surgeon, follows evidence-based protocols, and modifies treatment based on your individual response. Additional tools used in post-surgical rehab include:

  • Dry needling for post-surgical muscle guarding and trigger points
  • McKenzie Method principles for post-surgical spine patients
  • Progressive resistance training with precise load management
  • Neuromuscular re-education for joint position sense
  • Functional movement retraining for daily activities and sport

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start physical therapy after surgery?

This varies by procedure. Some surgeries (knee replacement, ACL reconstruction) benefit from PT starting within the first week. Others (rotator cuff repair, labral repairs) may require 2-4 weeks of protection before formal PT begins. For pre-hab, we recommend starting 4-6 weeks before your scheduled surgery date. Your surgeon’s protocol guides our timeline, and we coordinate directly with their office.

How is pre-hab different from regular physical therapy?

Prehab focuses on preparing for a planned procedure: assessing current ability, practicing suitable movement and organizing the practical demands of recovery. The program fits the available time and surgical advice; it cannot promise a particular recovery speed or medication outcome.

Why should I choose a cash-pay clinic for post-surgical rehab?

Post-surgical rehabilitation at Mindful Movement PT is one-on-one with Dr. Emily Warren. Your plan considers the procedure, your surgeon’s guidance and your progress toward daily activities.

Can you coordinate with my surgeon?

Yes. Dr. Emily Warren regularly communicates with orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons throughout the Salt Lake City area. She follows surgeon-specific protocols while incorporating evidence-based progressions. If your surgeon has specific precautions or timelines, we integrate those into your individualized treatment plan. We also provide progress updates to your surgical team at key milestones.
